NRI - Natural Resource Inventory
The Lower Macungie EAC arranged with the Lehigh County Conservation District to compile a Natural Resources Inventory (NRI) for the township to document critical natural resources. The NRI field work attempted to identify water resources present in Lower Macungie, specifically unmapped perennial and intermittent tributaries, wetlands, springs, and seeps. Mapping these hydrologic features will help ensure future protection of critical wildlife habitat and drinking water quality. The NRI also compiles information on threatened and endangered wildlife, prevalence of native and invasive vegetation, and forest land resources. The NRI was completed over the course of two years. All of the resulting mapping and field data were included in a final report (completed in December 2011) with recommendations for effective resource protection strategies. Attention Lower Macungie Nature Watchers…
Have you taken a stroll through the retrofitted Penn’s Meadow Stormwater Basin yet? You might remember the basin, located at the northeast corner of Sauerkraut and Willow Lanes, as it looked prior to 2010, with its concrete spillways and several acres of closely mowed grass. See picture below.
In the Summer of 2010, however, with funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the former basin was retrofitted with three different naturalized stormwater management structures, all of which empty into a small pond at the site. These naturalized stormwater structures help to filter out pollutants from street runoff before they can discharge into the Little Lehigh Creek by means of an overflow structure. In the Fall of 2010, volunteers, planted 150 native, deciduous trees in the upland area to the immediate north of the new stormwater control structures. The trees species include sweet gum, river birch, American sycamore, red-osier dogwood, elderberry, black willow, and silver maple. A recent check by the Pennsylvania district forester for our region found that an impressive 75 percent of those trees have survived their first two winters.
The Lower Macungie Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) has monitored the basin naturalization project since it’s initial planning stages. The site now features mulched walking paths. The EAC encourages Township residents to visit the site look for the various birds, butterflies, and other insects that have already made their homes in the newly created woodland, wetland, and meadow habitats.
