Penn’s Meadows Subdivision Stormwater Basin Naturalization Project
Lower Macungie Township, Keystone Engineering, Hilltop Excavating, and the Lehigh County Conservation District will be transforming the existing stormwater basin in Penn’s Meadows Subdivision (by the intersection of Sauerkraut Road and Willow Lane) into a naturalized area designed to boost aesthetics and provide ecological benefits. The completed project will have trails meandering through wildflower meadows, woodland areas, and wetlands as opposed to the currently mowed grass.
Naturalizing the stormwater basin will:
- Provide a scenic and colorful landscape with walking trails.
- Protect the water quality of the Little Lehigh Creek. Native plants will help filter pollutants from the water entering the basin (i.e. motor oil, salt from the roads, lawn fertilizers) before the water is released into the Little Lehigh Creek, which is a drinking water source for the City of Allentown.
- Create wildlife habitat. The project will provide crucial habitat for a variety of birds, butterflies, and amphibians.
The project is being funded through a grant from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (Pennvest), with the funding source being the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. Significant contributions are also being made by Hilltop Excavating, Keystone Engineering, the Lehigh County Conservation District, and Lower Macungie Township.
Earth moving and basin construction activities begin on June 14 and are expected to be completed in July 2010. Plantings will then be done in stages throughout the growing season. To see an example of a completed naturalized basin, check out the Wegman’s Supermarket off of Tilghman Street in Allentown or the Emergency Services building in Upper Macungie Township.
To find out more about the status of the project, please attend Lower Macungie Township EAC meetings. For all other questions or concerns, contact Erin Frederick at the Lehigh County Conservation District at 610-391-9583 ext. 25.
