NRI - Natural Resource Inventory

The Lower Macungie EAC arranged with the Lehigh County Conservation District to compile a Natural Resources Inventory (NRI) for the township to document critical natural resources. The NRI field work attempted to identify water resources present in Lower Macungie, specifically unmapped perennial and intermittent tributaries, wetlands, springs, and seeps. Mapping these hydrologic features will help ensure future protection of critical wildlife habitat and drinking water quality. The NRI also compiles information on threatened and endangered wildlife, prevalence of native and invasive vegetation, and forest land resources. The NRI was completed over the course of two years. All of the resulting mapping and field data were included in a final report (completed in December 2011) with recommendations for effective resource protection strategies. Click here to view the report.

Penn's Meadow Basin Naturalization Project Update

Earth moving and basin construction activities were completed over the summer of 2010. The basin was stabilized and seeded with native grasses and wildflowers. In late October 2010, staff from the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Lehigh County Conservation District, Keystone Engineering, Lower Macungie Township and other volunteers, planted 150 native, deciduous trees in holes that were augured by Hill Top Excavating. Trees planted included species such as sweet gum, river birch, American sycamore, red-osier dogwood, black willow and silver maple.

The project partners encourage Township residents to visit the site and take note of the newly created woodland, wetland, and meadow habitats.
